What Makes Good VSME Reporting Software? A Buyer’s Checklist for SMEs

If you’re reading this, then there’s a good chance that you’re increasingly being asked by larger customers, banks, or investors for sustainability data even though you have no reporting mandate yourself. 

VSME (EFRAG’s Voluntary SME Sustainability Reporting Standard) gives you a lightweight way to respond, and with EU’s Omnibus Directive, which took effect 18 March 2026, and narrowing mandatory CSRD reporting to companies with more than 1,000 employees and over €450 million in revenue, more mid-sized companies now sit in “voluntary VSME” territory.

First things first, do you actually need VSME software?

Truth is, if your company is only completing the Basic Module (11 disclosures, ~50 data points), a well-built spreadsheet or template can be entirely sufficient.

Paying for a dedicated software generally only becomes worth it when: 

• multiple people need to contribute data, 
• the Comprehensive Module is in scope (+9 disclosures, ~100 data points total), 
• the report needs to be reused across CSRD/CBAM/Scope 3 later, or 
• audit-trail/evidence tracking matters for banks or investors. 

Nevertheless, here’s what to look for should any of the above apply to you, or you’re just generally interested in what makes a good VSME ESG software.

Criterion 1: Module coverage (Basic vs. Comprehensive)

Does it support Basic only, or Basic + Comprehensive? Will you be able to start Basic and expand later without re-entering data?

Criterion 2: Reusability across frameworks

Does data entered for VSME get trapped in a silo, or can it feed into CSRD/ESRS, CBAM, or Scope 3 reporting later if your company grows past the Omnibus thresholds? 

This is especially important if you want a tool that won’t box you in.

Criterion 3: Guided data entry vs. blank-template approach

If you or your team has limited ESG expertise, look for built-in explanations, validation rules, and plausibility checks instead of an unguided form.

Criterion 4: Evidence and audit trail

Does it log who entered what, when, and support evidence upload? This matters if your VSME report will be scrutinized by a bank, investor, or a larger customer’s procurement team.

Criterion 5: Pricing that scales with company size

VSME software should not be priced like an enterprise CSRD platform. Pricing is rarely public in this category, so you should get a quote scoped to Basic-only use before assuming you’ll need the full package.

Criterion 6: Independent review evidence

Checking independent review sites like G2/Capterra directly, rather than trusting vendor claims, is always worth it. That said, many VSME-specific tools are early-stage with little or no independent review history yet. This shouldn’t be a disqualifying factor, it’s just something to keep in mind. 

Criterion 7: Vendor stability / EFRAG alignment

Is the vendor actively tracking EFRAG’s guidance as VSME evolves, or building against a static, dated spec? 

Important to note as an evolving framework requires a flexible, up-to-date tool.

As already mentioned, if your company is only completing the Basic Module (11 disclosures, ~50 data points) then you could honestly get away without using any kind of VSME software (a well-built spreadsheet or template will suffice).
