What is VSME, and why should your business care?

If you’re a small or medium-sized business, the pressure is building: bigger clients ask about your environmental impact, investors want numbers, and sustainability has quietly become part of doing business.

Most reporting standards were built for large corporations — hundreds of data points, dedicated teams, consultants on retainer. Not realistic for a 15-person company.

That’s where VSME comes in. Short for the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs, it’s a simplified framework letting smaller businesses report on energy, emissions, waste, and workforce practices — without a sustainability department.

Think “starter kit” version of the EU’s bigger standards (like CSRD). It’s voluntary, but not optional in practice: larger companies increasingly ask suppliers for this data, and banks are starting to request it too.

The good news? It’s mostly information you already have, just organized clearly. The real question is which tool makes that doable — which is exactly what’s next.
